Tendering: School demands grow

From the archive, first published Tuesday 7th Mar 2000.

Talks between headteachers and education bosses are to continue amid calls for a new school in the Tendring area.

New housing and more people in Clacton has put its primary schools under pressure.

Clacton councillor Roy Smith said: "By 2003 there could be 1,200 more children than can be accommodated - and they should not have to travel all the way to Harwich."

Mr Smith has taken a leading role in campaigning for a new school.

He said the ideal site would be West Clacton as Clacton High catered mainly for those in the eastern part of the town and Colbayns High mostly for those in the north.

A report put before Essex County Council education committee shows that both primary and secondary schools in the area will be affected.

It said headteachers agreed there was a problem and that between 800 and 1,000 new places were needed.

Talks are planned between council bosses, headteachers and school governors. A further report has been called for to set out the council's options.
